Media Temple’s Enterprise WordPress Hosting Solution

Media Temple, a people-powered web and cloud hosting solutions provider owned by GoDaddy, announced that it has launched Enterprise WordPress, a new WordPress hosting offering, in an effort to expand the company’s portfolio of managed WordPress hosting solutions for enterprises.

Enterprise WordPress will be the combination of Media Temple's expertise in running WordPress installs with 24/7 CloudTech Premier technical support and its new round-the-clock white glove account management service (mt) One, hosted on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. It means that a dedicated account manager will be assigned to a user in order to find a solution, as well as to provide a pro-active interaction. Deb Shea, Director of Strategy and Operations at Media Temple, stressed: “They [many enterprise-level customers] want real-timeliness and account managers who can advocate for them throughout the business, which is exactly what our new WordPress plans are offering.”

Many might think that the company could have offered the solution on its own platform instead of Amazon’s as Media Temple is a hosting provider after all. Brendan Fortune, Media Temple's Senior Director of Product Management, explains the situation during his interview with TechCrunch: “Media Temple’s servers are good, but there are things we can do with Amazon’s technology that you can’t do with a virtual private server. Building on top of Amazon’s container management service enables Media Temple to quickly scale a WordPress deployment up and down as needed, for example.” This also partially answers why they didn’t captivate AWS’s competitors such as the Google Cloud Platform or Azure instead. This is not the first time that Media Temple has offered managed cloud hosting on Amazon, so the company is already familiar with the AWS technology.

Besides the ability to provide time-efficient deployment of the WordPress platform, another very important reason behind the AWS integration is Amazon's Web Services’ compelling analytical tools and that they can foster scalability of docking containers, which could benefit Media Temple users.

When it comes to security issues, Enterprise WordPress sets apart production and deployment environments to lessen the risk of common WordPress exploitation and its CloudTech team will automatically patch WordPress installs. Also, the service uses Amazon’s CloudFront DDoS protection which provides distributed denial of service protection against SYN flood and DNS amplification attacks.

“Based on the feedback we collected from the WordPress community and our pilot program, we know that enterprises take WordPress very seriously. They also want to partner with experts who can unleash the power of the cloud for them and help increase their overall business efficiency,” said Brendan Fortune.

Media Temple offers two pricing plans; Enterprise WordPress and Enterprise WordPress Max Performance, both which include:

  • 5 sites and migrations

  • Developer tools

  • A staging environment

  • (mt) One

  • CloudTech Premier support

  • Redundant Web Servers

  • Redundant DB Servers

  • Redundant File Servers

  • Scalability

The standard enterprise plan offers 1TB of storage and 1.5TB of Amazon CloudFront bandwidth, scaling up to 10 EC2 instances using Docker Containers, and runs an Amazon RDS MySQL database for $2,500 a month.

The second "max performance" pricing plan offers four times the bandwidth, double the scaling capacity, and an Amazon Aurora MySQL database. However, it requires customers to inquire if they would like a quote due to a tailor pricing plan.

The company expects to attract more enterprise businesses with the new AWS-based WordPress Hosting Solution and the pricing is fairly in line with the market level, once considering the other managed WordPress hosting services’ upscale plans.
