The AI Summit is the world’s largest AI event for business and a meeting ground for global enterprises who have already found success from practical AI usage. There were opportunities for companies of all sizes and industry professionals looking to learn about AI, how it will continue to transform productivity, and what the future of the technology holds.

The two-day event was packed with a flurry of activities – think personal robots roaming the open space to professionals engaging in virtual reality demos – as well as some of the biggest brands in AI onsite to answer the burning questions of thousands of attendees. The long lineup consisted of some of the most innovative business leaders in the world including general managers, global heads, directors and other experts leading AI and research in their respective fields. The topics of all of the keynotes and sessions focused on their lessons learned in AI. Here are 5 important trends enterprises are focusing on with the use of AI in 2019:

Trust and transparency in AI decisions

Accountability for the outcomes of AI depends on the information the technology absorbs – information that is fed to it by businesses. As Beth Smith, General Manager, IBM Watson AI pointed out in her keynote during the AI Summit, “AI is allowing us to unlock knowledge from all of the data that exists in the world – 80% of that data is inside companies.”

With consumers and business increasingly relying on AI and the decisions it makes, it’s become more important than ever to learn just how those decisions are reached – all the steps, processes and data that is involved in the outcome.

Extending AI outside the organization

To increase AI adoption, we need to ensure people truly understand AI and its capabilities, and what we mean by its impact on the larger world. Despite its incorporation into the workplace, our homes, hospitals, and classrooms to name a few, there is still a growing population of people who are unaware of its full functionalities and whether or not to trust AI. In order to build that trust in society, we need to be doing all of the above to become confident in the decisions it makes before we implement it into the world.

Making AI accessible for every employee in your company

One of the most popular uses of AI is in automating routine tasks so that individuals are able to focus on more complex parts of their jobs. Apart from utilizing AI to produce more efficient, accurate results for external distribution, organizations must ensure the technology is also used to assist every single employee within their own companies.

AI is no longer the sole concern of data scientists and developers. As one speaker put it, “bringing AI to every employee is the last frontier of the journey.” This step is crucial in ensuring trust in AI can be established outside of the organization.

Hiring for a diversity of skills and perspectives

In order to protect against biased data and therefore biased results, we as an industry must recognize our due diligence in bringing a wide range of perspectives and experiences to the table. Diversity is a key part of any business strategy. To build responsible AI to produce unbiased results, one must possess the ability to understand nuances and input as much variety in data to ensure said results.

If we continue on a journey to use AI to solve more complex problems, the technology must incorporate as many different examples of information needed to do so – and making sure that every pair of eyes offer a unique perspective on that data is crucial.

Embracing change and adopting a first-mover mindset

There’s nothing as exhilarating as looking back at how far we have progressed in building smarter technology for a smarter future, while simultaneously looking forward to the work we must continue to do to ensure the advancement of artificial intelligence. We have found success in automating the simpler tasks – what lies ahead is the automation of more challenging, less easily-definable tasks.

The future of AI and expansion of its capabilities is the most exciting part of the business. Machine learning, deep learning and all the other functionalities of AI have already created massive changes in the world – from helping people at their jobs to creating new jobs, from providing aid in natural disasters to tapping into creative spaces.
